About Axillary Breast

Sometimes breast tissue develops where it should not, most commonly in the armpit region (the axilla). These accessory growths are called axillary breasts. While not uncommon, they can cause discomfort, irritation against clothing, and cosmetic concerns due to unwanted bulkiness. Recent studies suggest axillary breasts affect 2 to 6% of women, often appearing as lumps when the arms are at rest. Hormonal changes, weight gain, pregnancy, and menstruation can make them swell and feel tender.

Safe and effective treatment options for extra breast tissue removal surgery include liposuction and open excision. Liposuction works well when the bulk is mostly fatty, with small access incisions and quicker recovery. Open excision is used when there is significant glandular tissue or skin excess. The two can be combined when both elements are present. Dr. Agarwal selects the technique based on examination during consultation.

Benefits of axillary breast removal surgery include improved underarm contour, easier arm mobility, reduced clothing irritation, and discreet scarring hidden in the natural armpit crease. The procedure is generally a day-care surgery performed under local anaesthesia for liposuction, or general or sedation anaesthesia for excision-based approaches. The procedure typically takes about an hour. Excised tissue may be sent for histology when clinically indicated.

Recovery is generally comfortable. Some swelling, bruising, and numbness can persist for several weeks. Pressure garments are worn during recovery, and most patients return to desk work within five to seven days. Heavy lifting and gym training are deferred for around four to six weeks. Visible results typically appear within a couple of months as swelling settles. Scars are protected from sun exposure and may benefit from silicone-based scar creams to minimise visibility.

Like any surgery, axillary breast removal carries risks, including infection, hematoma, asymmetry, and the possibility of less-than-ideal cosmetic results. These are uncommon when patients are carefully selected and the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon. Dr. Agarwal will review your hormonal history, breast imaging where indicated, and overall health, then provide a clear written plan and an itemised estimate during consultation.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is axillary breast removal surgery safe?
Axillary breast removal is a low-risk procedure when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. At Kayakriti the operation is done in a sterile theatre with a qualified anaesthetist. Risks include bruising, hematoma, infection, asymmetry, or less-than-ideal cosmetic outcome. Careful patient selection, technique, and structured aftercare keep complications uncommon.
Will the scar be visible after underarm breast surgery?
We design the incision to sit within the natural armpit crease, where it is well concealed. Liposuction-only approaches use tiny millimetre incisions, while excision-based techniques have a slightly longer scar that still hides in the crease. Sun protection and silicone-based products help the line fade over six to twelve months.
How long is recovery from axillary breast surgery in Lucknow?
Most patients return to desk work in five to seven days. The pressure garment is worn for three to four weeks. Heavy lifting and gym training are deferred for around four to six weeks. Bruising and swelling settle over two to four weeks, and the final contour becomes apparent at two to three months as residual swelling resolves.
Are axillary breasts a health concern or only cosmetic?
Axillary breast tissue is usually a cosmetic concern rather than a health issue, but it can cause discomfort, hygiene problems, and self-consciousness. Because it is true breast tissue, it can also develop the same conditions as normal breasts (cysts, fibroadenomas, rarely cancer). Imaging is sometimes recommended before surgery.
Who is a good candidate for accessory breast tissue removal?
Good candidates are healthy adults with bothersome bulkiness, discomfort, or cosmetic concern, with stable weight and realistic expectations. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to wait. Untreated infection, bleeding disorders, or significant medical issues should be addressed first. Hormonal causes are reviewed before scheduling surgery.
