Tendon, Artery, and Nerve Damage

Tendon, artery and nerve damage treatment in Lucknow at Kayakriti repairs the deeper structures of the hand after cuts, crushes and avulsion injuries. Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, uses microsurgical technique to restore flexor and extensor function, blood flow through the radial and ulnar arteries and sensation along the median, ulnar and radial nerves. Our team supports a complete hand therapy programme.

About Tendon, Artery, and Nerve Damage

Hand injuries that involve tendons, arteries and nerves are complex and frequently coexist. Together these structures provide movement, blood flow and sensation, so even apparently small wounds can leave significant disability if any one component is missed. Careful examination, accurate diagnosis and timely repair are essential for a meaningful long-term recovery.

Tendons are tough, cord-like structures that transmit power from the forearm muscles into the fingers and thumb. Flexor tendons run on the palm side and bend the fingers for gripping, while extensor tendons run on the back of the hand to straighten the fingers and wrist. Injury to either group disrupts grip, pinch and the ability to open the hand.

Tendon injuries usually result from cuts, sudden forceful pulls or crush injuries from accidents, machinery, glass or household tools. Patients describe an inability to bend or straighten a finger, weakness on gripping and pain on movement. Tendon injuries are often associated with bone fractures, so X-rays are taken in our Lucknow clinic alongside clinical testing.

The hand receives dual blood supply through the radial and ulnar arteries, with each finger also fed from both sides. This redundancy can save a hand, but injuries to both major arteries leave the limb white, cold and senseless. Sharp cuts, crush and avulsion injuries are the common mechanisms, often requiring urgent vessel repair.

Arterial injuries are emergencies. Bleeding is controlled with direct pressure and limb elevation while transfer to surgery is arranged. Veins can sometimes be tied off safely, but arteries should be repaired wherever possible to restore flow. Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, plans simultaneous tendon, vessel and nerve repair to give the best chance of regaining function.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is hand microsurgery safe?
Yes, hand microsurgery has a strong safety record when performed by an experienced team. At Kayakriti, our team uses tourniquet control, magnification and meticulous technique to manage bleeding, infection and nerve injury risks. Specific risks are discussed clearly so patients understand what to expect at each stage.
How long until I can use my hand normally?
Tendon repairs typically need six to twelve weeks of structured therapy before strong gripping returns. Nerve recovery is slower and continues over many months. Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, plans rehabilitation step by step so patients regain dependable hand function while protecting the repair.
What does treatment cost in Lucknow?
Cost depends on the structures repaired, microsurgery time and length of stay. Combined tendon, artery and nerve repairs are more involved than single-structure procedures. After assessment, our team provides a clear, itemised estimate covering surgery, anaesthesia and follow-up so families can plan finances comfortably.
Will my sensation return after nerve repair?
Sensation usually returns gradually over months as nerve fibres regenerate at about one millimetre per day. Children and younger adults tend to recover faster than older patients. Sensory re-education exercises during hand therapy help the brain interpret the new signals, improving final functional outcomes.
Who should be evaluated urgently?
Anyone unable to bend or straighten a finger after a cut, with a cold or pale finger, or with numbness in part of the hand should be assessed urgently. Early specialist review at our Lucknow clinic improves the chance of timely tendon, artery or nerve repair and good long-term function.
