About Breast Reconstruction
Reconstructive breast surgery aims to recreate a natural-looking breast after cancer treatment, congenital differences or major injury. Options range from implant reconstruction surgery using tissue expanders and silicone implants, to flap-based techniques that use the patient's own tissue from the abdomen, back or thigh. The right approach depends on body shape, oncology plan and patient preference.
Reconstruction can be performed at the same time as mastectomy (immediate) or later (delayed). Immediate post mastectomy breast reconstruction often gives smoother aesthetic outcomes when oncologically appropriate, while delayed reconstruction is preferred when radiotherapy or systemic treatment is planned. We work closely with oncology teams so reconstructive timing supports, rather than compromises, cancer care.
Implant-based reconstruction is generally a shorter operation and recovery, suitable for women with healthy chest skin and modest breast volume. Tissue expanders may be placed first, gradually filled, then exchanged for a final implant. Cosmetic breast reconstruction principles are applied to optimise symmetry, including possible adjustment of the opposite breast through lift, reduction or augmentation.
Flap-based options use abdominal tissue (DIEP or TRAM), back tissue (latissimus dorsi) or thigh tissue, transferred with their own blood supply. These produce a soft, natural breast that ages with the body and tolerates radiotherapy well. They are longer operations requiring careful microsurgical technique and a more involved recovery, but offer excellent durability and aesthetic results.
Beyond breast mound reconstruction, we address nipple and areola reconstruction, scar refinement and symmetry procedures. Breast rebuild surgery is often staged so each step matures before the next. We discuss each option clearly, share photographs of typical results and provide written information so women and their families can make informed choices about timing, technique and any combined procedures.
Recovery times vary by technique. Implant-based reconstruction generally needs two to three weeks of light activity restriction, while flap-based procedures may require six to eight weeks before return to demanding work. Drains, scar care and follow-up oncology surveillance are coordinated with our team. Long-term reviews monitor cosmetic outcomes, implant integrity and any need for refinement procedures.
