About Filariasis
Filariasis is a tropical disease commonly seen in India, caused by infection with the filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti, transmitted through mosquito bites. The infection blocks the lymphatic vessels of the legs and genitalia, leading to fluid accumulation, recurrent infection and disfiguring swelling. Often acquired in childhood, the disease manifests later in life and can result in permanent disability if not treated.
When lymphatic filariasis treatment is delayed, the disease progresses to elephantiasis, a stage marked by gross enlargement and hardening of the affected body parts. Elephantiasis of the legs and scrotum is a major social and psychological burden in India, with many affected men living their entire lives untreated, facing discrimination and isolation. Kayakriti approaches this swelling due to filariasis with both surgical precision and dignity.
If patients seek help in early stages, before significant deformity, microsurgical options can restore much of the lost lymphatic flow. Free vascularised lymph node transfer involves harvesting superficial neck lymph nodes with their artery and vein and microsurgically anastomosing them at the ankle after tissue release. Lympho-venous bypass connects blocked lymphatics directly to small veins, offering an effective parasitic infection treatment outcome.
For severely deformed or advanced elephantiasis, debulking procedures help reduce limb bulk, improve mobility and ease hygiene. Genital elephantiasis is addressed with carefully planned reconstruction to restore appearance and function. Dr. Amit Agarwal's microsurgical training and reconstructive focus mean that even chronic, neglected cases can see meaningful improvement, with recovery of self-image at the heart of every plan.
