Introduction

Moles, nevi (birthmarks), warts, cysts, and lipomas are common skin conditions that may require removal for various reasons. Here’s what you need to know about their excision:

Moles and Their Removal

Moles can be present from birth or develop later in life, often due to sun exposure. They can be removed through radiofrequency, laser treatment , or surgery. Laser excision is not recommended for deep moles.

Cysts Removal

Cysts, such as sebaceous and dermoid cysts, are fluid-filled sacs that can occur in different body areas. They are typically removed through surgical excision.

Lipoma Excision

Lipomas are benign collections of fat cells in the body. They can be treated with liposuction or surgical excision.

Wart Removal

Warts are small, rough growths caused by the HPV virus. They can be surgically removed or treated with laser or radiofrequency methods.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Excision?

To be a good candidate for mole, nevus, cyst, wart, or lipoma excision:

  • You should be in good physical health and preferably a non-smoker. If you smoke, quitting for at least two weeks before surgery is advised.
  • Inform your doctor of any major chronic illnesses or medical conditions.
  • Share information about any previous removal surgeries and their biopsy reports.

Consultation for Excision

During your consultation, discuss:

  • Past medical conditions or surgeries.
  • Present illnesses, drug allergies, and ongoing medical treatments.
  • Any supplements you’re taking.
  • Alcohol and tobacco use.

  • If scars can be minimized.
  • How and where the surgery will be performed.
  • Risks and complications associated with the surgery.
  • Expected recovery time and duration of stay at the center.
  • Concerns about potential malignancy.
  • Preventive measures for future moles, nevi, cysts, warts, or lipomas.

Preparing for Surgery

Before surgery:

  • Avoid herbal supplements and anti-inflammatory drugs that can increase bleeding.
  • Quit smoking at least two weeks before the procedure.
  • Complete prescribed tests.
  • Sign a consent form explaining the procedure.

Mole, nevus, cyst, or lipoma excision is typically done under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

Excision Procedures

  • Removal of Small Lesions: Small moles, nevi, or warts may be removed with radiofrequency or simple shaving without sutures.
  • Removal of Larger Lesions: Larger moles, nevi, cysts, lipomas, or warts are usually removed through excision with sutures. The size of the border removed depends on concerns about malignancy.

The removed specimen is sent for pathological examination.
