About Reimplantation Surgery

Reimplantation surgery, also called replantation, is one of the most remarkable achievements of modern reconstructive medicine. It involves reattaching a fully severed body part to the patient using microsurgical technique. When successful, it can restore meaningful function and a near-normal appearance, but it requires immediate action, expert surgical skill and meticulous post-operative care.

Time is the single most important factor. Even severed parts remain viable only for a limited window. Patients with amputations should be transported quickly to a centre with microvascular surgeons and full operating-theatre support, such as our Lucknow facility. Delay reduces the chance of viable replantation and increases the risk of complications, including infection and tissue death.

Reimplantation involves the careful reconnection of small blood vessels, nerves, muscles, tendons, bones and ligaments under high magnification through a microscope. The procedure can take many hours and is undertaken by a two-team approach, with one team preparing the amputated part and the other preparing the stump simultaneously to minimise warm ischaemia time.

A wide range of body parts can be replanted in carefully selected cases, including fingers, hands, forearms, arms, toes, feet, legs, ears, scalp and penis. The choice depends on the level of injury, mechanism, age and overall fitness of the patient, as well as the condition in which the part has been transported.

Correct transportation makes a major difference. The amputated part should be wrapped in clean, moist gauze, sealed in a plastic bag and placed in another bag of crushed ice and water, never in direct contact with ice. Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, advises patients and referring teams to follow these steps so the part remains viable for surgery.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is reimplantation surgery safe?
Yes, when performed promptly by a trained microsurgical team. At Kayakriti, our team uses careful patient selection, meticulous microsurgery and ICU-level monitoring to keep risks acceptable. Specific risks such as flap failure, infection or stiffness are discussed openly with the patient and family before consent is given.
How successful is reimplantation?
Success depends on the part replanted, mechanism of injury, time since amputation and patient health. Clean cuts in healthy adults reach high success rates, while crush or avulsion injuries do less well. Even partial success can preserve length and function in carefully selected patients in Lucknow.
How long is recovery after replantation?
Most patients spend one to two weeks in hospital. Wound healing takes several weeks, while sensory and motor recovery continues for many months. Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, plans structured hand therapy to optimise grip, pinch and dexterity. Heavy manual work usually resumes between three and six months.
What does reimplantation cost in Lucknow?
Cost depends on the level of amputation, length of microsurgery, ICU care and any later refinement procedures. After your initial assessment, our team provides a transparent, itemised estimate covering surgery, anaesthesia and follow-up so families can plan finances and insurance documentation alongside emergency care.
Who is a candidate for replantation?
Children with almost any amputation, and adults with clean amputations of fingers, hands, forearms or feet, are usually candidates if the part is well preserved. Heavy crush, severe contamination or significant medical illness may favour completion of the amputation instead. Each decision is individualised.
