About Jaw Disorders

A jaw disorder is a painful condition of the lower jaw, typically presenting with clicking or popping sounds while opening the mouth, reduced mouth opening and spasms in the surrounding muscles. Patients often struggle to chew, yawn or speak comfortably. At Kayakriti, our jaw specialist in Lucknow carefully maps the pattern of pain and joint sounds before recommending targeted treatment for the temporomandibular joint disorder.

During every act of eating and speaking, only the lower jaw moves while the upper jaw remains fixed. When the muscles, ligaments or bones forming the temporomandibular joint become inflamed or irritated, jaw pain treatment becomes essential. The condition can be acute or chronic, and pain may range from mild discomfort to severe limitation, often radiating to the ear, temple and neck on the affected side.

Jaw disorders most commonly affect adults between 20 and 40 years of age and are seen more frequently in women than men. Triggers include trauma, bruxism, dental malocclusion, stress and arthritis. Neglected cases can lead to sleep apnoea, sleeplessness, anxiety and depression, which in turn worsen TMJ pain in a vicious cycle. Early jaw alignment treatment helps break this loop before chronic changes set in.

At Kayakriti, diagnosis combines a detailed clinical examination with imaging such as OPG and MRI of the joint where required. Most patients respond well to conservative measures including rest, soft diet, splints, physiotherapy and medication. When non-surgical care fails, options like intra-articular steroid injections, arthrocentesis or arthroscopic procedures are considered, always selected to protect long-term joint function rather than offer a quick fix.

What to expect

  • Detailed history of pain pattern, clicks, locking episodes and bite issues.
  • Clinical examination of jaw movement, muscle tenderness and dental occlusion.
  • Imaging like OPG, CT or MRI of the TMJ when clinically indicated.
  • Stepwise plan starting with conservative therapy, splints and physiotherapy.
  • Surgical options discussed only after non-surgical measures are exhausted.

Recovery

  • Most patients on conservative care resume office work within a few days.
  • Soft diet and jaw rest are advised for two to four weeks initially.
  • Post-injection patients usually return to routine work in three to five days.
  • After minor TMJ surgery, light work resumes in two to three weeks.
