About Resistant Tennis Elbow
If you are reading this, chances are you have chronic pain on the outer aspect of your dominant elbow, repeatedly diagnosed as tennis elbow, despite multiple medications, injections and physiotherapy sessions. Tennis elbow itself can take up to a year to settle even with correct treatment. But persistent or unusual pain often signals something else, deserving a fresh look at the chronic tennis elbow treatment plan.
One important mimic is radial tunnel syndrome. Patients have lingering pain in the elbow region and the upper part of the back of the forearm. The radial nerve runs from the side of the neck, down the back of the arm, through the forearm and into the hand, controlling forearm rotation, elbow straightening, wrist and finger movements. Compression here can imitate lateral epicondylitis treatment failures.
When the radial nerve reaches the elbow, it passes through the radial tunnel, a narrow space surrounded by muscles. Compression of the nerve here causes a nagging, deep ache in the upper forearm and outer elbow, often without significant weakness. Because the symptoms overlap with classical tennis elbow but have a different mechanism, radial tunnel syndrome is often called resistant tennis elbow or persistent elbow pain treatment territory.
Risk factors include repetitive forearm rotation, gripping and lifting, especially in women between 30 and 50 years. When the surrounding fascia and muscles become inflamed, they put excess pressure on the nerve. At Kayakriti, evaluation includes detailed examination, provocation tests, ultrasonography and nerve conduction studies. Treatment may involve activity modification, targeted injections or microsurgical radial tunnel release combined with tennis elbow surgery in Lucknow if needed.
