TMJ Ankylosis

TMJ ankylosis treatment in Lucknow at Kayakriti focuses on restoring mouth opening, eating and speech in patients with a fused jaw joint. Dr. Amit Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, uses precise reconstructive techniques to release the joint, prevent re-fusion and rebuild near-normal jaw function, especially in children whose growth is at stake.

About TMJ Ankylosis

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis occurs when the condyle of the mandible fuses with the glenoid fossa of the temporal bone. This obliterates the normal articulation, leaving the lower jaw immobile and the patient unable to open the mouth properly. Eating, dental hygiene and speech all suffer. Kayakriti offers focused mouth opening surgery aimed at re-establishing this lost articulation safely.

Normal mouth opening, measured between the upper and lower front teeth, is around 4 to 5 centimetres. In TMJ ankylosis, this can drop to a few millimetres or even zero. The condition may affect one or both joints, leading to facial asymmetry on the affected side. Children are particularly vulnerable because ongoing jaw growth is arrested, causing progressive deformity if jaw joint stiffness treatment is delayed.

TMJ ankylosis usually follows trauma to the joint, inflammatory arthritis, ear infections or post-operative complications of earlier TMJ surgery. Many families consult several physicians before a correct diagnosis is reached. Diagnosis is largely clinical, supported by 3D CT imaging of the joint. True intra-articular ankylosis must be carefully distinguished from extra-articular causes of restricted opening, since management strategies differ significantly.

At Kayakriti, TMJ surgery for ankylosis involves meticulous excision of the fused mass, interpositional arthroplasty and, where needed, distraction or graft reconstruction in growing children. The aim is not just to open the mouth on the table, but to maintain that opening lifelong with structured physiotherapy. Dr. Amit Agarwal's reconstructive training ensures that aesthetics, occlusion and function are addressed together.

What to expect

  • Clinical assessment of mouth opening, facial symmetry and dental occlusion.
  • 3D CT imaging of both temporomandibular joints to plan surgery.
  • Discussion of release technique, interpositional graft and reconstruction options.
  • Surgery under general anaesthesia with careful protection of facial nerve.
  • Early post-operative jaw physiotherapy to prevent re-ankylosis.

Recovery

  • Hospital stay is typically three to five days after TMJ ankylosis surgery.
  • Children resume school in three to four weeks with diet modifications.
  • Adults return to desk-based work in about four to six weeks.
  • Daily jaw exercises continue for six to twelve months to lock in opening.
